The later Wenger years has seen us recruiting a lot of sub standard players. We spend a lot of money on players like Mustafi, Granit Xhaka and Lacazette but they did not live up to expectations. At the same time we lost some of our best players without replacing them with like for like players. Cazorla for example is one of the players we lost during that time. This caused a very big team imbalance both in age and quality. When Emery took over this mediocre recruitment continued with players such as Sokratis and Lichtsteiner joining.

Ivan Gazidis who was the Chief Executive Officer at the time is responsible for bringing in most of these players and for the departure of players like Sanchez, Wilshere and Ramsey. He is also responsible for putting Mesut Ozil on high wages and recruiting Unai Emery without a plan to back him.

However, the arrival of Edu Gaspar and Mikel Arteta shifted Arsenal’s recruitment policy and we’ve started cleaning out most the substandard players and replacing them with young hungry players. Edu and Arteta are working on a long term project to rebuild the Arsenal squad.
