Unai Emery probably had the most difficult job at Arsenal. Replacing a legendary Premier League manager and the most successful manager at the club was always not going to be easy. Those are big shoes to fill. And everyone in the world of football agreed. But did Emery do everything right to make sure he succeed? We are going to look at some mistakes and things he did that cost him his job after 18 months in charge.
Mr Goodebening isn’t the worst manager in the world but his time at Arsenal was shambolic. He did have a great unbeaten run in his first season and few good performances against very big teams in the Premier League and in the Europa League where he also took Arsenal to the final. But there were certain decision that didn’t make sense.
Upon his arrival Emery had a creative team of Ozil, Ramsey, Mkhitaryan, Iwobi, Cazorla and Wilshere at his disposal. For a manager coming in a new league you would think he will keep some of them to build around. They are all experience players that know the league and are loved by the fans. But what ended up happening was Cazorla and Wilshere leaving on a free without replacement. That one didn’t sit well with me, yes they have their injury concerns but we should have kept at least one. He brought Torreira and Guendouzi with him, two players with different profiles to Cazorla and Wilshere.
The next season he allowed Ramsey to go on a free which was a big surprise because he stated earlier that he wanted Ramsey to be his captain. He also totally froze out Ozil, sold Iwobi and send Mkhitaryan on loan and brought us Ceballos as a replacement. Again this was a very bad decision as he was left with no creative player at the club. That contributed to a very poor start of his second season. Ozil wasn’t playing much during that time and Willock was still just getting used to first team football. His solution to that was to play Torreira as a number 10.
Those actions alone ended up costing him his job because the team was failing to create chances on the pitch.
